Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, and educator. He moved to various parts of Hungary with his father, a railway official, from an early age, and was exposed to a variety of musical cultures. He studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and began collecting Hungarian folk songs in 1905. His research paper published the following year had a profound effect on Bartók, and they traveled together ever since. He discovered Debussy's music on a trip to Paris in 1907, and became a professor at his alma mater in the same year. After that, he produced a succession of masterpieces, including the Cello Sonata (1915), String Quartet No. 2 (1916-1918), and Hungarian Psalms for tenor, chorus, and orchestra (1923). He then focused on music education, and won the respect of the Hungarian music world. Other well-known works include the orchestral suite "Hary Janos" (1927), the orchestral piece "Dances of Galanta" (1933), and "Missa Brevis" for solo voice, chorus, and orchestra (1944). → Dohnanyi → Related topics Impressionism | Oratorio | Starker | Dulcimer | Tubin | Dorati Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
