…the equilibrium organ of invertebrates, that is, the organ that senses the body's position relative to the direction of gravity, is a small pouch-like structure formed by the depression of ectodermal cells. The inner surface has many sensory hairs, and when the body tilts, the statolith inside the pouch touches sensory hairs in different parts of the body, thereby sensing the body's position. It is well developed in some animal groups, such as coelenterates, flatworms, nemertean worms, annelids, arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms, and protochordata, but its form and location vary depending on the animal group. …
