Dame Ellen Alice Terry

British actress. Born into a family of actors, she made her stage debut at the age of nine. She was a member of Charles Keane's theatre company for a time. After two marriages, she returned to the London stage in earnest in 1874, and immediately captivated audiences with her brilliant acting. She maintained her position as a leading actress for many years, but she gained fame especially for her 25-year collaboration with Henry Irving from 1878. She left a legacy of outstanding performances as leading female characters in Shakespeare and modern plays, including Ophelia, Beatrice, Juliet, and Lady Macbeth, and in 1906, 22 members of the Terry family appeared in support of her 50th anniversary performance on the stage. In 1907, she married a third time. She was also an accomplished writer, and wrote an autobiography, a theory on Shakespeare's acting, and her famous correspondence with Bernard Shaw. She was made a Dame in 1825. Her son was Gordon Craig, a famous stage designer and director.

イギリスの女優。俳優一家に生まれ、9歳で初舞台。しばらくチャールズ・キーンの劇団に所属。二度の結婚生活などを経て、1874年本格的にロンドンの舞台に復帰し、みごとな演技でたちまち観衆を魅了した。以来長く第一人者の地位を守るが、とくに78年から25年間にわたるヘンリー・アービングとの共演で名声を高めた。オフィーリア、ビアトリス、ジュリエット、マクベス夫人などシェークスピア劇や近代劇の女主人公で名演技を残し、1906年の舞台生活50周年公演には、テリー一家の22人が応援出演した。07年に三度めの結婚をした。また文筆にも秀で、自叙伝やシェークスピア劇の演技論、バーナード・ショーとの名高い往復書簡などを著した。25年デイムに叙せられた。舞台装置家・演出家として有名なゴードン・クレイグは息子である。
