1721‐83 German music theorist and composer. He studied under JS Bach for two years from 1739. From 1758 he served as the court conductor of Princess Anna Amalia of Berlin for the rest of her life. His compositions and performances were precise but lacked inspiration, and he was not highly praised by his contemporaries. His talents were more evident as a teacher and theorist, and he has written books on harmony, counterpoint, music teaching methods, and tuning.
