Terawaki Shell Mound

Japanese: 寺脇貝塚 - てらわきかいづか

This open-ocean shell mound is located in Kominatodernowaki, Onahama, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, and was built in the late to final Jomon period. It is the southernmost shell mound in the Tohoku region where so-called Kamegaoka-style pottery has been excavated. It is located on a hill at the eastern end of Onahama Bay, about 14m above sea level, and although its area is small at about 7,000m2, shell deposits can be found in two areas, A and B. Four surveys were carried out between 1950 and 1965. Area A produced many late-period artifacts, including two adult bones buried in a flexed position, while Area B contained layered deposits of late-period artifacts.

福島県いわき市小名浜字古湊寺ノ脇に所在する縄文後～晩期にかけて営まれた外洋性貝塚。いわゆる亀ヶ岡式土器を出土する貝塚としては東北地方最南端に位置する。小名浜湾の東端，標高14m内外の丘陵上にあって，その面積は約7000m2と狭いが，貝殻積成はA,Bの2ヵ所に認められる。1950‐65年に4次にわたる調査が行われた。A地区は晩期の遺物を多出し，2体の仰臥屈葬成人骨を出土し，B地区は後期の遺物が重層的に堆積していた。
