Caxias do Sul

A city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It is located 135 km north of the state capital, Porto Alegre, on a plateau at an altitude of 760 m. Its population is 262,983 (1991). It was founded mainly by Italian immigrants, and is home to the Italian Immigrant Memorial Museum, Casa de Pedra. Along with Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi, and Flores da Cunha, which have similar characteristics, it is a producer of grapes and wine. It is a commercial and industrial center, and is home to industries such as auto parts, motors, and ready-made clothing.
