Moonstone - Moonstone (English spelling)

Also known as moonstone, it is a type of potassium feldspar that has a white or blue pearlescent flash on a milky white background, and is often orthoclase or anorthoclase. This sparkle is caused by the fact that very fine leaf-like sodium-rich plagioclase is intergrown in a fairly regular pattern within the potassium feldspar. In other words, the potassium feldspar has a kind of lattice pattern, which causes light interference and produces a unique color. Therefore, in order to use it as a gemstone, it needs to be polished into a cabochon shape in a specific direction that causes light interference. It is famous for being produced from pegmatites in Sri Lanka and Myanmar (Burma). It is not very valuable as a gemstone because it is low in hardness and rare. In Japan, anorthoclase moonstone is produced from the shores of Lake Aoki in Nagano Prefecture, but it is small and not suitable for decorative purposes. The word moonstone is sometimes used to refer to plagioclase, which has a similar pearlescent glow. In particular, peristerite, a type of sodium-rich plagioclase that has fine intergrowths of sodium-rich and calcium-rich parts inside it, often produces flashes.

月長石ともいい、乳白色の地に白ないし青い真珠光のような閃光(せんこう)を出すカリ長石の一種で、正長石やアノーソクレースであることが多い。この輝きは、カリ長石中に、非常に微細な葉片状のナトリウムに富む斜長石がかなり規則正しくいくつも連晶しているためおこる。つまり、カリ長石の中が一種の格子縞(じま)のようになっているので、光の干渉が生じて独特の色を出すのである。そのため、宝石として使うためには、光の干渉をおこす特定の方向でカボション形に磨く必要がある。スリランカ、ミャンマー（ビルマ）などのペグマタイトから産出するものが有名。硬度が低く、希少性に乏しいため宝石としての価値はあまりない。わが国では、長野県青木湖畔などからアノーソクレース質のムーンストーンが産出するが、小さいので装飾用にはならない。ムーンストーンを同じような真珠光を放つ斜長石に使うこともある。とくに、ペリスター石peristeriteとよばれるナトリウムに富む斜長石で、その内部がナトリウムに富む部分とカルシウムに富む部分が微細な連晶をしているようなものはよく閃光を出す。
