A monster from Greek mythology. Gaia, angry at Zeus for imprisoning the Titans in Tartarus, mated with Tartarus to give birth to a giant monster with 100 snake heads, breathed fire from its mouth, and was snake-shaped from the thighs down, stretching from one end of the world to the other. He fought Zeus and showed the upper hand for a time, and according to one legend, he captured Zeus and imprisoned him in a cave, but he was eventually defeated by a lightning bolt and crushed under the volcano Etna, where he still breathes fire. He mated with Echidna and gave birth to monsters such as Cerberus, the guard dog of hell, the Hydra, the Chimera, and Orthrus.
