Otawara [city] - Otawara

Japanese: 大田原[市] - おおたわら
Otawara [city] - Otawara
A city in the northeastern part of Tochigi Prefecture, occupying part of Nasunohara. The Naka River runs through the eastern part. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center is located in a spring water zone at the end of the Nasu alluvial fan, and developed as a castle town of the Otawara clan and a post town on the Oshu Kaido road. With the opening of the Higashino Railway in 1916, it became the center of the north of the prefecture, and local government offices moved in. The Higashino Railway was abolished in 1968, and a bus service is available from Nishinasuno on the Tohoku Main Line. Despite the inconvenience of transportation, the city has attracted businesses to the industrial park, and electrical equipment, chemicals, and other industries have flourished. Local industries include brewing, food, and lumber. Rural areas are covered with large rice paddies, and chili peppers for export are also widely cultivated. In October 2005, Kurobane Town and Yutsugami Village in Nasu County were incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 354.36 km 2 . 77,729 people (2010).
