An art magazine. It was first published in October 1889 (Meiji 22) by Takahashi Kenzo (1855-98), one of the leading proponents of the treasure research project in Japan at the time, and his friend Okakura Tenshin. Its main purpose was to provide critiques and research on Oriental art, especially Japanese art, and to reproduce ancient art in woodblock and photographic prints and introduce them to the world at large. The reproductions of ancient art were made using Japan's unique woodblock color printing technique, as well as the collotype technique, which was introduced for the first time from America at that time. As a result, it was sold not only in Japan but also in Europe and the United States, and since 1905 (Meiji 38) it has been published monthly by Kokkasha with the support of the Asahi Shimbun Company. An English edition was also published at one time, but publication ceased in June 1918 (Taisho 7) due to World War I. 美術雑誌。
