1510?-44? French author. He was a humanist who was appointed secretary to Marguerite de Navarre in 1536, but is believed to have committed suicide around 1544. His mysterious satirical dialogue Cumbarum Mundi (The Bell of the World) (1538), which he published anonymously and was banned by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Paris upon its publication, has generally been thought to contain bold criticism of Christian doctrine. However, in recent years, some have interpreted it as a book that preaches evangelical Christian faith. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
