Umbrella pavilion

Japanese:
Umbrella pavilion

Along with Shiguretei, this teahouse stands on a hill in the grounds of Kodaiji Temple in Kyoto, and is said to be a relic from Fushimi Castle. Both are built of logs with thatched roofs, giving them a simple appearance. Many of the components have been replaced and the antique charm has been lost, but they still convey the atmosphere of a free-spirited teahouse from the Momoyama period. The single-story Kasatei and the two-story Shiguretei are connected by an open-air earthen-floored corridor said to have been made by Kobori Enshu, creating a rare and well-balanced exterior. Kasatei was originally called "Ankankutsu," and the inscription is displayed on the beam supporting the ridge. The name Kasatei came from the fact that the bamboo rafters radiate out from inside the Hogyo-zukuri roof. And so, the two-storey teahouse came to be called Shiguretei, after the umbrella. The Kasatei has an upper level with one tatami mat space in one corner, and a lower roof equipped with a "kudo" on the opposite side. The second floor of the Shiguretei is open on three sides with raised windows, half of which is the upper level, and the lower level has a floor, next to which a bamboo pillar is erected and a "kudo" is placed to serve as a tearoom. A circular window is cut into the floor to let in the outside view, showing an elegant design.
