A city in northern Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. It occupies the Odate Basin in the middle reaches of the Yoneshiro River and the mountainous areas in the north and east, and in 1967 incorporated the town of Hanaya. The city center developed on the terraces in the eastern part of the basin, and was a castle town and river port of the Oba clan (later the Satake clan) during the Edo period. It is a junction of the Ou Main Line and the Hanawa Line, and is connected to the Akita Expressway. There are many beautiful forests of Akita cedar in the surrounding area, and the lumber and woodworking industries are thriving, with bentwood crafts being a specialty. The basin produces a lot of rice. It was known for having Japan's largest black ore deposits, but mining ceased at the Hanaoka mine in 1973, the Shakanai mine closed in 1987, and the Matsumine and Fukazawa mines closed in March 1994. It is the home of Akita dogs (a natural monument) and Koeyoshi chickens (a natural monument). In 1993, the Shirakami Mountains in the north were registered on the World Heritage List. In June 2005, the towns of Hinai and Tashiro in Kitaakita County were incorporated. 913.22 km2 . 78,946 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
