[Died] March 10, 1669, London. English poet. During the Puritan Revolution he was a Royalist and fled to France. After the Restoration he became Superintendent of Constructions and was knighted in 1661. His representative work, Cooper's Hill (1642), combines descriptions of nature with moral, historical and political considerations, and is a precursor to the 18th century descriptive meditation poetry. His graceful and elegant heroic couplets were praised by J. Dryden, A. Pope and others, and marked the beginning of a trend in this form of poetry.

Died: May 8, 1828. Freetown, Sierra Leone. British traveller. Served in the Napoleonic Wars as an army officer. In 1821, he left Tripoli to join a British government survey team. In 1823, he crossed the Sahara and arrived at Bornu, where he left the group to survey the west, south and southeast shores of Lake Chad, and the lower reaches of the Ouabi, Logone and Chari rivers. He reunited with the group in June 1825 and returned to the United States. In 1827, he went to West Africa as an overseer of freed slaves, and was later appointed Governor of Sierra Leone.
