A five-membered aromatic heterocyclic compound containing four nitrogen atoms. It exists as tautomers of 1H -1,2,3,4-tetrazole and 2H - 1,2,3,4-tetrazole, and the two cannot be separated at room temperature. It is a colorless plate crystal with a melting point of 155°C. It is sublimable. It is soluble in water, ethyl alcohol, and acetone, and sparingly soluble in ether and benzene. When the metal salt is heated or struck hard, it explodes.
