qan

…also called khan or khan (kan). Originally a title used by the northern nomads of the Altai Turks and Mongols on the Mongolian Plateau, it was derived from qaghan (transliterated from Chinese characters as 可漢) or its shortened form カン (khan). It was first seen in historical documents at the end of the 4th century when the chief of Rouran, Shelun, called himself Kültebüri Qaghan. Later, the Turks who founded states in North and Central Asia called themselves Kültebüri Qaghan. Turk It was widely used throughout the empire.
