Single-skin drum - Tampiko (English spelling) dān pí gǔ

Japanese: 単皮鼓 - たんぴこ（英語表記）dān pí gǔ

A type of Chinese percussion instrument. The body is made of hard, thick wood, and the drum head is about 25 cm in diameter, but the edges are wide and there is a small 5-7 cm hole in the center called the heart of the drum, and the drum head is covered with pigskin or cowhide. It is also called a board drum, a skin drum, or a small drum. Some types have another small hole near the heart of the drum. When played, it is placed on a tripod-like stand and struck with two rattan or bamboo sticks. There are double-da, single-da, and moda types, and striking the heart produces a low note and striking the side of the drum produces a high note. It is used with a board to accompany folk instrumental ensembles and opera music.

中国の打楽器の一種。胴は硬い厚みのある木で鼓面は直径25cmくらいあるが，縁が幅広く，鼓心と呼ばれる中央にわずかに5～7cmの孔があり，鼓面には豚革，または牛革が張られている。板鼓，皮鼓，小鼓とも呼ばれる。鼓心のそばにもう一つ小さな孔のある種類もある。演奏の際は三脚に似た台に置いて，籐または竹製の2本の桴（ばち）で打奏する。双打，単打，悶打の別があり，鼓心をたたくと低音が，鼓辺では高音が出る。民間の器楽合奏，戯曲音楽の伴奏に板（はん）といっしょに用いられる。
