...On the other hand, the South German artists Lukas Moser (c. 1390-?), Witz and Hans Multscher (c. 1400-67) showed faithful observations of nature, giving the impression that a new era was just around the corner. However, the artists who played a major role in German painting in the second half of the 15th century were Hans Pleydenwurf (?-1472), Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519), Schongauer, Holbein the Elder and Pacher, who created works that were directly and indirectly influenced by Netherlandish and northern Italian painting, preparing the way for the emergence of Dürer.
