...an external combustion engine that heats gas placed in a cylinder from the outside, expands it, and produces work. In principle, it has the same thermal efficiency as a Carnot cycle heat engine, which operates in the same temperature range, and has been called a dream engine. Since it was patented by Scottish Robert Stirling (1790-1878) in 1816, it was quite widely used as a simple and safe engine that uses air as a working fluid, alongside the steam engine, until the end of the 19th century. However, with the emergence and practical application of so-called internal combustion engines such as gasoline engines and diesel engines, it gradually disappeared.
