A city in northern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1949. It occupies an alluvial plain between the Tone River and the Arakawa River. Oshi, located in the center of the city, was built by Narita Chikayasu at the end of the 15th century and developed as a castle town. Since the Kan'ei era, it has been known as a producer of Gyoda tabi, but in recent years, the production has decreased and shifted to clothing and socks. Since the 1960s, precision equipment, transportation equipment, metals and other industries have flourished. The rural areas are still rich in rice, wheat and vegetables. The area around the Saitama (Sakitama) Kofun Group (historic site) in the southeast was developed as Sakitama Fudoki no Oka in 1969. In Suka in the north, there is the Tone Ozeki, which takes water for the water supply from the Tone River to be sent to Tokyo and other areas. The Chichibu Railway runs through the city. In January 2006, Minamikawahara Village in Kitasaitama County was incorporated. The area is 67.49 km2 . 85,786 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
