Willem de Kooning

American painter and a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism. Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he was exposed to the De Stijl movement and traveled to the United States in 1926. In 1929 he met Gorky, and both were inspired by Picasso. He also learned about formal abstraction from Pollock's work. His Woman series, which he began in 1950, depicted hideous lumps of female flesh with intense brushstrokes, and attracted attention as an existentialist portrayal of humanity. From then on, he produced unrestrained paintings with rigid brushstrokes and a high level of abstraction, but at the root of his work was a vision of overlapping flesh and landscape.

アメリカの画家。抽象表現主義の代表的作家。オランダのロッテルダムに生まれ，〈デ･ステイル〉の運動にふれた後，1926年アメリカに渡る。29年ゴーキーと出会い，ともにピカソに刺激される。またポロックの作品に形態の抽象化を学ぶ。50年から描きはじめた〈女〉シリーズは，醜悪な肉塊の女体を激しい筆触で描き，実存主義的な人間像として話題を呼んだ。以後，剛直な筆触で抽象度をつよめた奔放な画面を描いたが，その根底には，肉体と風景を重ね合わせたビジョンがある。
