Amano Tameyuki - Amano Tameyuki

Japanese:
Amano Tameyuki - Amano Tameyuki

Economist, economic commentator, and educator. Born in Edo on December 27, 1860, as the eldest son of a doctor from Karatsu Domain. In July 1882 (Meiji 15), he graduated from the Department of Politics and Finance at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Tokyo, and immediately became a full-time lecturer at Tokyo Senmon Gakko (the predecessor to Waseda University). He devoted himself to the management and education of the university until he resigned as president and professor in 1917 (Taisho 6) during the so-called Waseda University Uprising, and was called one of the "Three Great Men of Waseda" along with Takada Sanae and Tsubouchi Shoyo. He also made an outstanding contribution to the establishment of Waseda Jitsugyo School, and served as its principal from 1902 (Meiji 35), the year after the school's founding, until his death on March 26, 1938 (Showa 13). On the other hand, he ran in the first general election in 1890 as a candidate of the Constitutional Reform Party from Saga Prefecture and was elected, serving as a member of the House of Representatives for just one term, and also participated in the founding and management of the Toyo Keizai Shinposha (1895-1907), and published numerous commentaries. His ideology was a liberalism in the vein of British utilitarianism, particularly J.S. Mill, but differed from Taguchi Ukichi in that he accepted protectionist policies as an exception in reality. His "Principles of Economics," published in March 1886, was the first easy-to-read, full-scale economic theory written by a Japanese, and went through many editions. His other major works include "Commercial Policy Standard" (1886), a compilation of economic policy theory, and "Economic Policy Theory" (1910), a collection of essays.
