Ikaruga Palace

Prince Shotoku built this palace in Ikaruga (Ikoma County, Nara Prefecture) in 601 (the 9th year of the reign of Empress Suiko). In 643 (the 2nd year of the reign of Empress Kogyoku), the palace was burned down by soldiers of Soga no Iruka, and the prince's eldest son, Prince Yamashiro no Oe, who managed to escape, committed suicide at Horyu-ji Temple with his family. According to the "History of the Eastern Temple of Horyu-ji Temple," the Eastern Temple complex was built on the site of the palace in 739 (the 11th year of Tenpyo) at the request of Sozu Gyoshin. A group of post-hole buildings discovered underground during repair work on the Eastern Temple in 1939 (Showa 14) were accompanied by burnt roofing tiles, burnt wall soil, and ashes, and are believed to be part of the Ikaruga Palace.

聖徳太子が601年（推古天皇9）斑鳩（奈良県生駒(いこま)郡斑鳩町）に営んだ宮室。643年（皇極天皇2）蘇我入鹿(そがのいるか)の兵によって焼き払われ、いったん逃れた太子の長子山背大兄王(やましろのおおえのおう)も一族とともに法隆寺で自殺した。『法隆寺東院縁起』によれば、739年（天平11）行信僧都(ぎょうしんそうず)の奏上によって宮跡に東院伽藍(がらん)がつくられた。1939年（昭和14）東院の修理工事に際してその地下から発見された一群の掘立て柱建物は、焼け瓦(がわら)、焼け壁土、灰などを伴っていて、斑鳩宮の一部であると推定されている。
