IFF is an abbreviation of "identification friend or foe." It is a device that is used in combination with radar to identify targets. When a coded interrogation signal is sent from the ground device, the on-board response device sends back a coded signal corresponding to the interrogation, and the identification code is displayed next to the echo on the scope at the same time. The SIF (short for special identification of feature), which has been improved by increasing the number of pulse trains in the response signal and enabling the identification of nearly 500 different combinations, is now in practical use and is also used to identify civilian aircraft. → All-weather fighter
