Unkei

A Chinese literary figure from the Qing dynasty. His courtesy name was Ziju and his title was Jiantang. He was from Wujin County, Jiangsu Province, but called himself a native of the neighboring county of Yanghu. He was a Juren in 1783 (the 48th year of the Qianlong reign). In 1787 he was appointed a teacher and while in the capital he mingled with many notable people, especially Zhang Huiyan, who was also from Wujin. From 1794 onwards he served as the governor of Fuyang in Zhejiang and Xinyu in Jiangxi, but in 1814 he was impeached at the joint governorship of Nanchang Prefecture in Jiangxi and left politics. Together with Zhang Huiyan, he is said to be the founder of the Yanghu school of classical Chinese, and advocated a free-spirited classical style modelled on the style of the Records of the Grand Historian. His works include the 8-volume Dayun Shanfang Wengu.

中国、清(しん)代の文人。字(あざな)は子居、号は簡堂(かんどう)。江蘇(こうそ)省武進県の出身であるが、隣県の陽湖の人と自称する。1783年（乾隆48）の挙人。87年教習に任ぜられて都にいる間に多くの名士と交わったが、とくに同じ武進出身の張恵言(ちょうけいげん)と親交を結ぶ。94年以後、浙江(せっこう)富陽、江西新喩(しんゆ)などの知県を歴任、1814年江西南昌(なんしょう)府同知のとき弾劾されて政界を去った。張恵言とともに陽湖派古文の祖といわれ、『史記』の文体を手本とした気性のびやかな古文を提唱した。『大雲山房文稿』8巻などがある。
