〘 noun 〙① A dance performed using only the hands. Especially a dance performed using only hand gestures while sitting. ※Shintai Shisho (1882), preface by Toyama Shoichi: "To the Japanese, Chinese poetry is like the hand dance of a marionette."② A dance performed on festival stages and vaudeville halls, accompanied by shamisen songs such as edgy songs and folk songs, in contrast to Kabuki Shosakugoto. ※Seiyo Dochu Hizakurige (1870-76), by Kanagaki Robun, chapter 8: "Each person took off their loincloths, wrung out the water, and waved their bleached hands as if watching a dance."③ A dance performed by a large number of people using the same hand gestures. Bon Odori, Miyako Odori, Ise Ondo, Jinku Odori, etc. ※Asano Shinbun - December 14, 1892 (Meiji 25) "We respect the sect that performs hand dancing" ④ In Kabuki dance, the part where the dancer does not hold anything and mainly dances with the hands and feet. ※Kabuki - Teiso Hanatoba Koizuka (1809) Sanritsu "There are various steps, and hand dancing is scattered here and there" ⑤ A simple dance that aims for lightness and does not focus on facial expressions.

〘名〙① 手だけでおどる踊。特に、すわって手振りだけでする踊。※新体詩抄(1882)序〈外山正一〉「日本人に取りては支那流の詩は恰も〈略〉操人形の手踊の如きものなり」② 歌舞伎所作事に対して、祭り舞台や寄席などで端唄や俗曲などの三味線につれてする踊。※西洋道中膝栗毛(1870‐76)〈仮名垣魯文〉八「ふんどしをめいめいときて水をしぼり布さらしの手をどりを見るごとくふりかざし」③ 多人数そろって、同じ手振りでおどる踊。盆踊、都踊、伊勢音頭、甚句踊など。※朝野新聞‐明治二五年(1892)一二月一四日「手踊りをなす教派を奉じ」④ 歌舞伎舞踊のなかで、なにも持たず、主として手と足とでおどる部分。※歌舞伎・貞操花鳥羽恋塚(1809)三立「いろいろ振り事あって、手踊(テヲド)りちらしまであって」⑤ 軽快を旨として、表情を主としない簡単な踊。
