Parrot shell - Nautilus

Japanese: オウムガイ(鸚鵡貝) - オウムガイ（英語表記）nautilus

A mollusk of the family Nautilidae in the order Nautiloidea of the class Cephalopoda (illustration). The shell is about 20 cm in length and 9 cm in width, and at first glance looks like a snail shell, but it is actually flat-wound. The surface of the shell is smooth and matte white, with many irregular reddish-brown radial stripes. The part that rolls into the opening of the shell is covered with a black membrane, and when viewed from the side, it resembles the profile of a parrot's head, hence the name. The body of the animal is present as if it is stuck in the final large chamber of the spiral shell, which is divided into multiple chambers.

頭足綱オウムガイ目オウムガイ科の軟体動物（イラスト）。殻は長径20cm，幅9cmくらいで，一見巻貝の殻のように見えるが，平巻き。殻表はつやがなく白色で滑らか，多くの赤褐色の不規則な放射状の縞模様がある。殻口に巻き込んでいる部分は黒色の膜に覆われ，これを側面から見ると，オウムの頭部のプロフィールを連想させるところからこの名がある。　動物体は多室に分かれたらせん状の貝殻の最終の広い室にはまりこんだように存在する。
