Year of death: 20th September 1820 (26th October 1820)
Year of birth: 1757
An ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period. His Kubo or Kubota clan name was commonly known as Yakubei. He is said to have lived in Kodenmacho or Kameicho in Edo. His other artist names include Shunman and Shozado. He studied painting under Itori Uohiko and later Kitao Shigemasa, and began his career as an artist from the mid-An'ei period (1772-1781) onwards, working on illustrations for sharehon (Japanese humorous books). During the Tenmei period (1781-1789), he produced many nishiki-e prints of beautiful women in a style similar to that of Torii Kiyonaga, but his style is calm and pure rather than flashy. He also produced many hand-painted pictures of beautiful women of all genres from the end of the Tenmei period through the Bunka period (1804-1818). From the Kansei period (1789-1801) onwards, he played a leading role in the production of privately printed prints, and over 300 of his works have been identified as his remains. Besides being an artist, he was also an excellent kyoka poet and comic novelist, and is famous under the pen names Issetsu Senjo and Nandaga Shiran, respectively.
