The capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state in central-west Brazil. Population 663,621 (2000). It is located 1,050 km from São Paulo on the Noroeste line, which connects São Paulo to Bolivia. The surrounding area is a vast grassland ranch region, where coffee, soybeans, wheat, and other crops are produced. Tourists gather to collect indigenous cultural artifacts and ornaments. A Japanese settlement called Várzea Alegre is located in the northwestern suburbs of the city.
