The capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state in central-west Brazil. Population 663,621 (2000). It is located 1,050 km from São Paulo on the Noroeste line, which connects São Paulo to Bolivia. The surrounding area is a vast grassland ranch region, where coffee, soybeans, wheat, and other crops are produced. Tourists gather to collect indigenous cultural artifacts and ornaments. A Japanese settlement called Várzea Alegre is located in the northwestern suburbs of the city.

ブラジル中西部、マト・グロッソ・ド・スール州の州都。人口66万3621(2000)。サン・パウロからボリビアに通じる鉄道ノロエステ線でサン・パウロから1050キロメートルに位置する。付近は広大な草原の大牧場地域で、コーヒー、大豆、小麦などの生産が盛んである。先住民の文物、装飾品を収集する観光客が集まる。市の北西近郊に日本人の集団入植地バルゼア・アレグレがある。
