A Buddhist ruin located on the outskirts of Varanasi (Benares) in northern India. Sarnath is said to be a corrupted version of the bodhisattva name Sharanga Natha, which means Deer Garden in the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures, and was probably named after the large number of deer that lived there. This is famous as the place where Shakyamuni first visited after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and preached to five monks, that is, the place where he first turned the wheel of the Dharma. Today, the remains of the Gupta monastery, including the Dhamekh Stupa (43.6 meters high), remain as they were excavated, and the museum adjacent to the ruins displays many stone statues, including a lion statue on a pillar capital built by King Ashoka and the famous Buddha statue representing the first turning of the wheel of the Dharma in the Gupta dynasty. The temple, which was built in 1931, also houses murals depicting the life of Buddha painted by the Japanese artist Nosu Kosetsu (1885-1982).
