A genus of the Araceae family. Japanese name: Shirogasurisou. 20-30 species are distributed in tropical America. An evergreen perennial with alternate, oblong leaves. Large species can reach 2m in height. A leaf sheath at the base of the leaf wraps around a cylindrical, fleshy stem. There are many horticultural varieties, and beautiful varieties with fine white or pale yellow spots or stripes on the leaves are grown in pots as ornamental plants. The sap that comes out of the cut contains poisonous substances that, if ingested, will numb the person and make them unable to speak, so it is also called dumb cane or mute cane. It prefers high temperatures and humidity. Except in midsummer, it is better to expose the plant to sunlight to prevent the leaves from burning, as this will help the plant to become firmer. In winter, water sparingly and keep the temperature above 10°C. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
