Browne, H.

...A conflict between Britain, France and China over the exploitation of Yunnan's underground resources and trade routes through Yunnan. The Indian government conducted its first Yunnan survey in 1868, and in 1874 sent an expedition led by Colonel H. Browne through Burma (now Myanmar). The British Embassy in Beijing sent Margaret A. Margary as an interpreter, but he was killed by an armed Chinese near the Yunnan-Burma border on February 21, 1875 (the first year of the Guangxu era).
