A city in the southeastern part of Bahia State, on the central east coast of Brazil. It is located about 220 km south-southwest of the state capital, Salvador, in the lowlands on the Atlantic coast, overlooking the Cachoeira River. It is a commercial center in the agricultural and pastoral region, distributing cacao, cattle, etc. It is connected to Salvador by road. Population: 185,180 (1991 estimate).
