Tsuda

Japanese:
Tsuda
It is located in Myodo District, Awa Province, in the eastern part of Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, at the mouth of the river where the Shinmachi River and Sonose River join and flow into the Kii Channel. In the Middle Ages, it was an island called Tsudajima, and was part of the Tomita Manor of Yamato Kasuga Shrine, which was issued a certificate in 1204 as a donation by Oe Yasukane. According to the document issued in the same year, it bordered Katsuura Manor to the south and Minamisuketou Manor to the north and west, faced the sea to the east, and had an inlet to the west. In the early modern period, the Kawaguchi Guard Station was established as one of the outer ports under Tokushima Castle, and indigo and other special products of the Tokushima Domain were shipped from there. At the end of the Edo period, there were said to be about 40 shipping companies. Tsudaura, located right in front of the island, was also a fishing ground, and the Uogobuichi Yakusho (fish tax office) was also located there. The port was severely damaged by a major flood in 1854, and was repaired by Yamatoya Yoichibei, Jyukenya Tatsujirobei and others from the Ansei era (1854-1860) to the beginning of the Keio era (1865-1868). At the end of the Edo period, a battery was built and equipped with 20 cannons. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), Tsuda Port boasted one of the largest export volumes of goods in western Japan, and in 1879 a regular route between Osaka and Tokushima was opened, leading to a steady increase in passenger numbers. However, sedimentation at the river mouth made it difficult for large passenger ships to enter the port, and from 1913 it was used only as a fishing port.
