Marlene Dietrich

American actress and singer. Born to a middle-class aristocratic family in Berlin, she studied theater and music, and began appearing in films and on stage in 1923. In 1930, she was selected to play the role of Lola in the German film "The Blue Angel" directed by Hollywood director Sternberg, and entered the American film industry that same year. By 1935, she had starred in six films with director Sternberg: "Morocco," "The Spy," "Shanghai Express," "Blonde Venus," "The Pageant of Love," and "Spain Rhapsody." She created an era with her decadent beauty, such as "Million Dollar Legs," and was often compared to G. Garbo. She hated the Nazis, so she became a naturalized American citizen in 1939, and during World War II, she was active in entertaining soldiers on the European front lines. With her signature songs including "Lili Marleen," she also became active as an entertainer from 1953 onwards, and first visited Japan for the Osaka World Exposition in 1970. Her other film appearances include "Desert Garden" (1936), "Knight Without Armour" (1937), "Mad Love" (1946) and "Mistress" (1958).

アメリカの女優、歌手。ベルリンの中流貴族の家柄の出身で、演劇と音楽を学んだのち、1923年から映画と舞台に出演。1930年、ハリウッドのスタンバーグ監督のドイツ映画『嘆きの天使』のローラ役に抜擢(ばってき)され、同年アメリカ映画界入りをし、スタンバーグ監督とのコンビで1935年までに『モロッコ』『間諜(かんちょう)X27』『上海(シャンハイ)特急』『ブロンド・ヴィナス』『恋のページェント』『西班牙(スペイン)狂想曲』の6本に主演。「100万ドルの脚(あし)」と退廃美で一時代を築き、G・ガルボとしばしば対比された。ナチスを嫌って1939年にはアメリカに帰化し、第二次世界大戦中はヨーロッパの前線で兵士の慰問に活躍した。『リリー・マルレーン』をはじめとする持ち歌で、1953年以降はエンターテイナーとしても活躍、1970年（昭和45）の大阪万国博覧会で初来日した。その他の映画出演に『砂漠の花園』（1936）、『鎧(よろい)なき騎士』（1937）、『狂恋』（1946）、『情婦』（1958）など。
