Dong people (Dong tribe) - Tongzoku (English spelling) Dòng zú

Japanese: トン族(侗族) - トンぞく（英語表記）Dòng zú

An ethnic minority group found in southeastern Guizhou, Hunan, and Guangxi Dong Autonomous Region, China. They call themselves Kham. The Han people call them Dongren or Dongjia. Population: over 2.5 million (1990). The largest population is in the southeast Qiang Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou. They are also found in autonomous counties such as Tongdao and Xinhuang in Hunan, and Sanjiang and Longsheng in Guangxi. Their language belongs to the Kham group of Tai languages. They are roughly divided into north and south dialect regions based on dialect, with Qimeng in Jinping County, Guizhou as the border. Originally they had no written language, but the Dong script was established in 1958.

中国，貴州省南東部，湖南省，広西トン族自治区に分布する少数民族。自称カム。漢族は洞人，洞家と呼称。人口250万余(1990)。最多集居地区は貴州省黔（けん）東南ミヤオ(苗)族トン族自治州。そのほか湖南省の通道，新晃，広西の三江，竜勝など各自治県に分布。言語系統は，タイ諸語のうちカム語群の系統に属す。方言により，貴州省錦屛県啓蒙を境にして南北の方言区に大別する。元来無文字であるが，1958年トン文字が制定された。
