1845‐96 French astronomer. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He became director of the Toulouse Observatory in 1873, a professor at the University of Paris in 1878, a professor at the Sorbonne in 1883, and director of the Paris Observatory in 1892. He was active in the field of celestial mechanics, including theories of lunar motion, cometary motion, and the shapes of celestial bodies, and is famous for his Tisserand formula for identifying comets. In 1874, he came to Japan to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun. He served as editor-in-chief of the magazine Bulletin astronomique, which was first published in 1884, and has served since its inception.
