1491‐1556 Founder of the Society of Jesus. Baptized as Inigo, he was born at the Castle of Loyola in Guipúzcoa, Basque Country, northern Spain. After receiving an education at the royal court (1506-17), he became a soldier for the Spanish viceroy of Navarrese (1518-21). He served in the war against France and was seriously wounded in both legs by cannonballs during the Battle of Pamplona on May 20, 1521. While on his sickbed at the Castle of Loyola, he was moved by Jacobus de Voragine's The Golden Legend and Rudolf von Saxony's The Life of Christ, and saw the light of conversion.
