This is the most primitive form of Japanese clothing, and was formerly known as nu no kataginu (cloth shoulder garment). In ancient times, sleeves that covered the hands with abundant fabric were a symbol of the aristocratic class of the time, while sleeveless garments that required a minimum amount of fabric and were suitable for work were the clothing of those of lower status. Ancient garments called chihaya and kanto-gi are also thought to have been sleeveless when they first appeared. In the Edo period, there were sleeveless dogi, haori, and hanten. These were also given regional nicknames such as jinbe, saruko, denchi, and chanchanko, which shows that they were widely worn nationwide by people of all ages and genders.
