Generally, in the Carolingian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, this term refers to the bishoprics, archbishoprics, and monasteries that had the emperor as their direct protector, based on the supernatural authority of the emperor and the Germanic system of private church ownership. However, it is also sometimes used to refer to the church organization in the Roman Byzantine Empire and the anti-Roman churches of Germany and Austria in the mid-18th century. This system was strengthened by the church policies of the Ottonian emperors in particular, and eventually triggered the Investiture Controversy.
