Digul (river)

Japanese: ディグル[川]（英語表記）Digul

The largest river in Irian Jaya, in the western half of New Guinea, Indonesia. It originates near Mount Mandara (formerly known as Mount Juliana) in the Central Mountain Range, flows south through large marshes, then turns west and meanders before emptying into the Arafura Sea. It is approximately 800 km long. The river's mouth was discovered by the Dutch Navy in 1903, and exploration of the basin took place between 1905 and 1909. The river is 6 km wide at its mouth, and with its abundant water, it is navigable quite upstream. However, the downstream basin is a marshland covered in dense forest, and is extremely sparsely populated. [Bessagi Atsuhiko]
