July 3rd Incident

An attempted coup d'état that took place in Indonesia on July 2-3, 1946. The Republic of Indonesia, which had declared independence in August of the previous year, was at war with its former colonial power, the Netherlands, in an attempt to achieve real independence, but within the country there was a struggle between moderates known as the "diplomatic faction," who sought to restore sovereignty only to the islands of Java and Madura, and hard-line factions known as the "combat faction," who sought complete independence for the entire territory. In this incident, the latter abducted Prime Minister Sjahrir and other government officials from the diplomatic faction, allegedly in an attempt to seize power.

1946年7月2日から3日にかけてインドネシアで起こったクーデタ未遂事件。前年8月に独立を宣言したインドネシア共和国は，独立の実質を獲得するため旧宗主国オランダと戦争状態にあったが，国内ではジャワ島とマドゥラ島に限定して主権を回復しようとする〈外交派〉と呼ばれる穏健派と，全領土の完全独立をめざす〈闘争派〉と呼ばれる強硬派が拮抗していた。この事件では，後者がシャフリル首相ら外交派の政府要人を拉致し，権力の奪取をはかったとされる。
