A city in the Zachodnyo Pomorskie Voivodeship in northwest Poland. It is known as Kolberg in German. It is located on the estuary plain of the Parszenta River, which flows into the Baltic Sea, and is known as a fishing port, a bathing beach, and a spa resort (especially for children). It is one of the oldest fortresses in the Baltic region. In 1000, Bolesław I established a bishopric here and built the first cathedral in West Pomerania. It joined the Hanseatic League in the early 14th century, and was occupied by the March of Brandenburg after 1648, and remained a fortress there until the end of the 18th century. During World War II, 90% of the city was destroyed, but it was returned to Polish territory and rebuilt after the war. Population 44,947 (2002).
