Low Church

Japanese: 低教会 - ていきょうかい（英語表記）Low Church

An evangelical group within the Anglican Church. In contrast to the High Church, which emphasized bishoprics, priesthood, sacraments, and historical beliefs, the High Church took the position of the two major principles of the Reformation, "Scripture alone" and "faith alone," and emphasized personal conversion and sanctification over liturgy. Originally a movement opposed to the 17th century Laudite movement (W. Lord), it was also greatly influenced by Wesley's Methodist movement, and in the 19th century made a major contribution to the Anglican Church's overseas missions and the abolitionist movement.

アングリカン･チャーチ内の福音主義に立つグループ。主教職，司祭職，サクラメント，歴史的信条を強調する高教会派に対して，宗教改革の二大原理，〈聖書のみ〉〈信仰のみ〉の立場に立ち，典礼よりも個人の改心と聖化を強調する。元来17世紀のロード派(W.ロード)に対抗する運動であったが，ウェスリーのメソディスト運動からも大きな影響を受け，19世紀にはアングリカン･チャーチの海外伝道と奴隷制廃止運動に大きな貢献を果たした。
