Pierides

...The spotted pattern was also seen as evil, and it is said to have been a punishment for refusing to mourn the death of Christ, or for mocking the sight of humans drowning without boarding Noah's Ark. In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Pierides, who was a skilled singer, challenges the Muses to a singing contest, but is defeated and transformed into a magpie. The belief that this bird serves witches and demons is deeply rooted in many places, and in Sweden it is believed that witches transform into magpies when they go out.
