Arita mandarin oranges - Arita mandarin oranges

…Since early modern times, mandarin oranges have been cultivated in the mountainous areas to the north and south of the Arida River basin. Encouraged by the feudal domain, they flourished and were shipped to Edo as Arita mandarins. Minoshima and Kitaminato prospered as shipping ports. Even today, most of the cultivated land in the city is mandarin orange orchards. …

From the Arida River

...In 1966, the Futagawa Dam was built upstream as a multipurpose dam, and is used for disaster prevention and irrigation. Since early modern times, Arita mandarins have been cultivated at the foot of the mountain, but since 1960, the floodplain rice fields have been converted, and more than 80% of the total cultivated land in the basin is now mandarin orchards. For a long time, the central city of the basin was Yuasa Town to the south, but as modern factories have moved into Arita City at the river's mouth, banks and government offices have gradually moved there, and Arita City is becoming the central city. ...

From Wakayama Prefecture

[Outer edge of Keihanshin]
The story of Kinokuniya Bunzaemon, who transported mandarin oranges to Edo (present-day Tokyo), is well known, but since the Edo period, maritime traffic has generally transported soy sauce, vinegar, and other products to the Edo market, and Kishu mandarin oranges have been supported by a strong connection with the Osaka market. Currently, the production of mandarin oranges from the prefecture known as Arita mandarins (1995) is second only to Ehime Prefecture, but it is in a difficult situation due to falling prices caused by overproduction and the liberalization of orange imports. The construction of National Route 42, which circles the Kii Peninsula, in 1965 and the opening of the Hanwa Expressway in 1974 further strengthened Wakayama's ties with the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe region.
