A non-impact printer that prints by applying heat with a thermal head (heating element). It is also called a thermal printer. There are direct thermal printers that use heat-sensitive color-developing paper and thermal transfer printers that use ink ribbons. Direct thermal printers are widely used in facsimiles, but most are solid black and have the disadvantage of being prone to discoloration over time. Thermal transfer printers include those that use melting ink and those that use sublimation dyes, and by using three or four colors on the ink ribbon, full color can be easily produced.
