A check with two parallel lines drawn on its face. Also called a crossed check. This system was established to prevent losses due to theft or loss of checks, which are often payable at sight and payable to bearer. In other words, with a crossed check, the holder cannot receive payment unless it goes through the holder's own bank or another bank. In the event of theft or loss, the issuer or the legitimate holder can prevent the fraudulent holder from cashing it by reporting the theft or loss to the bank.
