Died January 28/29, 1876. Hungarian politician in Budapest. Born into a middle-class noble family. He led the liberal reform movement from 1833. During the 1848 Revolution, he participated in drafting the March Laws as a moderate and served as Minister of Justice in the Bacányi cabinet. When the War of Independence broke out, he retired to his estates. He played an active role as the Hungarian representative in the preliminary negotiations leading to the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867), and came into conflict with the exiled Kossuth. Although he avoided public office, he maintained great authority in politics as the "wise man of the country" and promoted liberal legislation.
