A general term for the genus Thunbergia in the family Acanthaceae (APG classification: Acanthaceae). There are about 100 species of perennial or shrub-like creeping plants distributed in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and tropical Asia. The following species are well known. T. alata Bojer is a creeping perennial native to tropical Africa, but it is treated as an annual plant because it is sown in spring and flowers in summer. It is characterized by broad wings on the petioles. The flowers are bell-shaped, with five lobes, orange-yellow in color, and the central tubular part is black-purple, but white flowers are also available. They are used for hedges, ground cover, hanging pots, and lanterns. T. fragrans Roxb. has slightly fleshy leaves and no wings on the petioles. The flowers are white, 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter, and have no fragrance. T. grandiflora Roxb. is a large perennial vine native to the Bengal region. It produces racemes from autumn to winter, and blooms blue-purple flowers. There is a white-flowered variety. T. laurifolia Lindl. has flowers similar to the previous species, but its leaves are broadly lanceolate and resemble those of the bay laurel. It is rarely cultivated in ornamental greenhouses. T. erecta (Benth.) T. Anders. is a shrub native to tropical West Africa, and blooms trumpet-shaped blue-purple flowers in the leaf axils. There is a horticultural variety with white flowers. T. vogeliana Benth. is similar in shape to T. erecta, but both the leaves and flowers are much larger. It blooms all year round, and is suitable for potted plants. All species of Thunbergia prefer good sunlight and overwinter at temperatures above 5°C. It is propagated by cuttings. [Takabayashi Masatoshi October 20, 2021] Native to tropical Africa. The flowers are bell-shaped, with five-lobed corollas that are orange-yellow and a tubular central part that is black-purple. There are also horticultural varieties with white flowers. T.Anders.
